When you install carpeting in your home, you want to do everything you can to keep it looking clean and new at all times. Over time, it is not uncommon for carpet to become worn and stained. Once carpeting loses its visual appeal, your home’s beauty diminishes. Here are some tips for helping you keep your carpet looking new for as long as possible.
- No shoes – do not allow anyone to wear shoes on your carpet, even guests. Shoes track all sorts of dirt onto your carpet, which will quickly ruin the appearance of carpeting. Set up a mat on the front porch or in your entryway and designate that as the holder of all shoes.
- Take care of your carpet – this includes regular maintenance, such as vacuuming, along with professional maintenance. You should have your carpets cleaned at least once each year and more often if you have pets and/or children.
- Pay attention to the color of the carpeting you want to install – choose colors and patterns that will better hide dirt and stains. Avoid light colors, such as whites and pastels, especially if you have children and pets.
- Choose carpeting that is resistant to stains – this will help minimize the damage that comes from spilled drinks and pet accidents. If and when a spill or accident occurs, clean it up as soon as possible to prevent it from damaging the carpet, padding and underlying floor.
- Keep the busy areas free of carpeting – it does not take long for carpeting in high-traffic areas to become worn. Once the pile of the carpeting is worn down, that particular area of carpet will stick out like a sore thumb.
- Utilize area rugs for additional protection – Not only will the area rug keep the carpet underneath more protected from spills and accidents, the area rug will also provide some texture and contrast to the overall design of the room.
